Overview

Adega Mayor is a winery located in Campo Maior, in the Alto Alentejo region of Portugal, right along the Spanish border. It belongs to the Nabeiro Group — the same group that owns Delta Cafés — making it a sister brand within the group's portfolio, alongside coffee. The first vines were planted in 1997, and ten years later the winery opened its doors as the first custom-built winery in Portugal, designed by architect Siza Vieira.

Founding and vision

The winery was founded under the direction of Commander Manuel Rui Azinhais Nabeiro, a noted Portuguese entrepreneur, philanthropist, and regional leader who was born and raised in Campo Maior. His vision was to create a winery that would celebrate and elevate the viticultural heritage and terroir of his home region. Rui Nabeiro passed away on March 19, 2023, at the age of 91, having seen his dream fully realized. His granddaughter, Rita Nabeiro, helped bring the project's contemporary identity to life.

The estate and terroir

Adega Mayor sits on a 350-hectare (roughly 865-acre) estate, immediately south of the Serra de São Mamede mountain range, with a landscape of riparian galleries, holm oak groves, and agricultural fields. Soil composition is largely granitic due to proximity to the mountains, with significant areas of clay-rich limestone and sandy loam. The land is divided into two main sections — the Argamassas Estate, where the winery itself sits, and the nearby Godinha Estate — with vineyards also spread across Herdade da Marrada Alta, Monte do Firmino, and Monte da Pina.

The Argamassas Estate, with its clay-rich limestone soils, focuses on red varietals such as Trincadeira, Castelão, Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, and Touriga Nacional, and white varieties such as Antão Vaz and Verdelho. The unique terroir, shaped by the São Mamede mountain range, gives the wines freshness and minerality, blending Alentejo's typical body and complexity with the softness that comes from granite soils.

Architecture

The building is a horizontal, white-painted, two-floor construction, with a third floor dedicated to tourism and promotion. It measures roughly 40×120 meters and is founded on an existing cavity, with 9-meter walls rising from there. The upper floor is reserved for the social and public side of wine — a tasting room opens onto a panoramic terrace with a lawn and a lake, anchored by a sculpted marble panel designed by Siza Vieira, depicting overlapping silhouettes of a coffee cup, a wine glass, and a bottle — a nice visual nod to the Nabeiro Group's dual heritage in coffee and wine. The panoramic terrace offers views of vineyards, olive groves, and the Serra de Portalegre.

Winemaking and recognition

Winemaker Carlos Rodrigues, who has international experience in Australia and Chile, has led the winery since 2012. Under his direction, Adega Mayor has produced award-winning wines, including the Pai Chão Branco, named Best White Wine of Portugal in 2023. The winery has earned recognition from Decanter, Wine Enthusiast, and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Its flagship wine, the Pai Chão Grande Reserva, is considered the most iconic label, produced only in exceptional years.

Wine tourism

Adega Mayor was Portugal's first "author winery" built specifically for wine tourism, and it remains a pioneer in that space, offering immersive experiences that showcase the essence of Alentejo. In 2024, it expanded its offerings to include Wine Tasting with Chocolates, a Wine Course, and Tasting with the Winemaker. A practical note for planning a visit: summer temperatures at the estate climb quickly and can reach 37–42°C in August, and the nearby European Coffee Museum in Campo Maior is often recommended as a companion visit.
