GREEK OREGANO

Oregano is a herb with a slightly sweet and spicy flavor and very intense aroma. It is native and cultivated in shrub lands throughout Greece in cool areas of low altitude since antiquity. Apart from its use as a seasoning, oregano is known for its medicinal properties. Hippocrates, the "father" of medicine in ancient Greece, used oregano to several treatments. The essential oil of oregano (riganelaio) is used in perfume and medicine. The word "oregano" comes from the composition of the words "oros" (mountain) and "ganos" (joy) and means the joy of the mountain.

Oregano is widely used in Greek and Italian cuisine, in grilled meats, poultry, fish, pizza, pasta sauces, beans, etc. It is also used to give flavor and aroma in vegetables, wines, and salad dressings.
