A dynamic global market

The global seafood market is valued at €574 billion in 2024, with an average annual growth rate of +6.5% expected through 2028.

Global consumption continues to rise, driven by the growing demand for sustainable protein sources and high–value-added products.

The main market hubs are China (€95 billion), India (€54 billion), and Japan (€47 billion) : together account for more than one-third of the global market value.

Asia alone represents over half of the world seafood market, generating USD 367 billion in revenue, confirming its strategic leadership role.

This demand is fueled by rising purchasing power (especially among middle-class consumers), a more diverse product offering, and the widespread availability of frozen and ready-to-eat seafood options.

In Europe and France: a strong consumption base

In Europe, household spending on seafood products grew by +7% in 2022, with demand particularly focused on processed, smoked, and frozen products.

Today, two-thirds of all fish consumed in Europe are frozen, confirming the strategic importance of the frozen seafood segment.

France represents a €13 billion market, ranking as the 5th largest in the world with a 4.4% global market share.

Seafood consumption is nearly universal in France (96% of French consumers eat fish) driven by sustainable, locally sourced, and ready-to-cook product ranges that align with modern dietary expectations.

Key trends:

  • Salmon remains the main growth driver with +17% in 2024.
  • Shellfish and crustaceans have gained +5 points in value since 2021, reflecting growing demand for premium and festive products.
  • Seaweed and marine algae, growing at +8% annually, are emerging as a high-potential segment, supported by research and innovation in alternative proteins.

These developments confirm the strong appeal of the seafood sector, which brings together the three main consumer drivers in both Europe and Asia: health, pleasure, and sustainability.
